IW5002-DP is a module that charges large capacity supercapacitors (EDLC) at high speed. Fully charges a 2.5V 100F capacitor in about 1 minute. The final voltage can be adjusted from 1.8V to 2.8V.
Charging Demonstration Video
This is a demonstration video of charging a 200F electric double-layer capacitor using the IW5002-DP. The numerical value on the central tester shows the terminal voltage of the capacitor. You can see how it increases linearly immediately after charging begins. The capacitor is fully charged in about 2 minutes. (Note: The circuit board in the video is from an older revision.)
What is Electric Double-Layer Capacitors (EDLC)
An Electric Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC) is a capacitor that enhances energy storage efficiency by utilizing the electric double-layer phenomenon. They are used in various fields such as electric vehicles and renewable energy. They are also known as ultracapacitors or supercapacitors.
Optimal Circuit for Charging Capacitors
To charge electric double-layer capacitors, constant current charging is necessary. The IW5002-DP is equipped with a buck converter circuit specialized for charging electric double-layer capacitors. A high-current power inductor from Bourns is used at the heart of the converter. Additionally, a high-capacity, low-loss Schottky barrier diode has a significant impact on efficiency. Power MOSFETs, which are low-loss switching elements, are used. Furthermore, efficient thermal design eliminates the need for a heatsink.
