The principle of ultrasonic distance measurement

The IWS520-USB measures distance by calculating the time delay of acoustic echoes. Since the speed of sound is constant, approximately 340 m/s, distance can be determined by measuring this time. For example, if the delay is 10 milliseconds, the distance to the target object is approximately 1.7 meters.

How to Use

• Demo Application: A free demo application is provided for measuring distances, graphing, and recording data to CSV files (Windows only).

• Control Command "iws520ctl": For external program control, the command "iws520ctl" is provided (compatible with Windows/Linux). Since iws520ctl outputs simple text data, it can easily be integrated with other programs or redirected to a CSV file for logging purposes.

Attentions

• Due to the nature of ultrasonic distance measurement, variations in temperature, air pressure, and humidity can cause inaccuracies. For precise distance measurements, it is recommended to use calibrated measuring instruments such as laser-based devices.
• Surfaces that are uneven or materials like clothing, fur, or fabric that absorb sound waves will weaken the reflection, resulting in shorter measurable distances.
